Proactive is a mobile app created for users to track and share their fitness goals and progress.

A well-established company’s family and friends health tracking app has ways to
set individual goals, monitor them and then once achieved, displays them on the user’s
home screen. However, the app is facing issues with retaining users. After a period of time, users stop using the app and then they delete it altogether. How might we increase retention and user engagement?

OVERVIEW

For this project, I was brought on to create an in-app community for Proactive. This was the first time I had used competitive analysis toward creating

  1. Create the opportunity for users to message each other with health and fitness goals/achievements.

  2. Create an integrated messaging experience throughout the product drives
    engagement and repeat usage.

RESEARCH AND COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

With the help of an in-app messaging feature, engagement and repeat usage metrics will increase, as that is the overarching goal. The question becomes, how might we integrate existing features with an in-app messaging feature?

  • Categories are organized

  • “Close the ring”/progress bar was a familiar layout that users enjoyed.

  • Nav bar is simple (Summary, Fitness+, Sharing)

After completing user interviews and competitive analysis with large competitors like Apple Fitness and Strava. I had a foundation of how the layout will be designed and what features were most important to users.

  • Has a feed for users to share their progress.

  • Kudos feature gives users’s friends a chance to validate and acknowledge progress.

  • Option to communicate through groups option on bottom of the screen.

  • Has a great social user base with a way to post and interact with others.

Strava

To get a better understanding of what is working, I conducted competitive analysis on two successful exisiting apps.
